“We are entering a renaissance of counselor education, preparation and training.”

Moving forward, ACA must take what it learned from operating during a pandemic to maximize the services, resources, representation and advocacy we provide to the counseling profession. We do this so that you can better serve your clients, students and communities.
We can be discouraged by many things, but I find myself constantly reenergized by what I know you are all doing to make our communities, our nation and, really, our world a better place. You are what keeps me going, and for that I am grateful.
As a society, we have much to learn. As a profession, counselors have much to do. The path involves the following: question, discuss, reflect, counsel, grow. If this can be done with patience, respect, grace and openness, I think the importance and influence of the counseling profession will continue to flourish.
If there were ever a time when our communities, nation and world needed the amazing work of professional counselors, it is now.
We have entered a new environment, one in which we will still depend on our life experiences but also need to embrace how we will operate with those whom we interact. For counselors, this encompasses clients and students who have been affected and shaped by the pandemic.
“While 2020 was the year of surprises, 2021 will be a year of uncertainty. In fact, I think the only certainty this year is knowing that it will be filled with uncertainty.”
Let’s be hopeful for 2021. Let’s be joyful that we are entering a new year. And let’s make sure that communities, the media and public policymakers truly understand what a key role professional counselors can play in the lives of those seeking help.
“As we begin to put 2020 in the rearview mirror, take a moment to reflect on how you overcame challenges this year, and then know that the resilience you possess truly makes you an even better professional counselor.”
“… In order to keep going and to help others thrive, I encourage you to continue practicing the basics of self-care. Just as you are passionate about helping others find their way, you must know when it is time to take a break, consult with colleagues or even stop counseling long enough to recharge.”
